Department Overview

The TI Clinical Research Assistant will assist the Total Joints and Tumor Ortho faculty with clinical research activities. 

The duties of this position will include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Assisting in the planning and implementation of research protocols including subject screening and
  enrollment, study appointment scheduling, responding to inquiries regarding the protocols, collection
  and maintenance of research data and specimens, analysis of research data
• Attending meetings pertaining to research activities
• Assisting in preparation of new protocols for IRB submission
• Assisting with manuscript development
• Developing electronic data capture systems
• Assisting in preparation of grant proposals and submissions
• Attending meetings pertaining to research activities
• Working with the lab on specimen collection and processing and development and implementation of
  lab model systems

Function/Duties of Position

• Research Development Assists in developing new research questions and projects, conducts thorough literature reviews, determines correct methods to answer research questions, and prepares protocols. Assists in preparing research grant proposals and submissions.    
• Research Administration Ensures study confirms to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) standards and Institutional Review Board (IRB) requirements, prepares IRB forms and any necessary electronic IRB documentation, oversees eIRB submission and maintains eIRB documentation, prepares and maintains study source and regulatory documents. Schedules patients and ensures that study timelines are followed.    
• Research Data Collects/organizes/analyzes research data, project-specific
  responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: creates standard operating
  procedures and designs forms for data collection, coordinates recruitment,
  scheduling, and testing of research subjects, conducts chart review to abstract
  pertinent data fields, queries databases to obtain data, manages and cleans data,
  conducts statistical analyses. Assists with surgical specimen collection and lab
  processing of specimens.    
• Manuscript Preparation Assists in revising and preparing manuscripts, formats manuscripts for specific journal requirements.    
• Education Attends grand rounds/conferences.    
• Reporting Prepares reports on project status and sends updates.    
• Mentoring/Training Assists with training of new research staff and mentoring School of Medicine students and volunteers per departmental standard operating procedures.    

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in relevant field OR
• Associate's and 2 years of relevant experiences OR
• 3 years of relevant experience OR equivalent combination of training and experience    
• Prior clinical and/or research experience 
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs. Typing, editing, proof reading skills. Analytical and extremely detail oriented. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.      
• Ability to perform the job duties with or without accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

• Completion of statistics course.
• Prior research experience.
• Experience with research electronic data capture systems.
• Knowledge of orthopaedic and oncology research.

• Knowledge of IRB process. Familiarity with basic statistics.

• Prior database management experience.  

• Exceptional computer skills and ability to learn new software.    

• Knowledge of Epic

Additional Details

Daily hours will vary with responsibilities.  Clinic hours are Monday Friday; 8:00 p.m. 4:30 p.m.  Occasional early or late hours may be needed, in particular to accommodate involvement with surgical cases (7:30 am start) and surgical education sessions (6:30 am start). This position is mostly on campus with some ability to remote work.
