Description
We are seeking a Project Architect with at least five years of experience to join the architecture team in our Trenton, New Jersey office. We are looking for a technically strong architect who is ready to lead projects and help design great places.
Clarke Caton Hintz is a planning and design collaborative. Founded in 1979, we have developed into one of the region’s most respected architectural, planning, and landscape design firms. We have over 40 people in one office, more than 20 of them architects, working alongside colleagues in planning, landscape architecture, and interior design. Having all of those disciplines in-house widens the range of projects we pursue and the problems clients ask us to solve. Our aim throughout is enduring architecture, livable places, and durable environments. We balance high-performance design with thoughtful approaches to celebrate places and context. Our work has been recognized with nearly 200 awards since 1994.
Projects range across higher education, civic and municipal buildings, courthouses and justice facilities, libraries, housing, parking structures, athletic facilities, historic preservation and adaptive reuse, and interiors, for public- and private-sector clients across New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and the region. A large share of the work is renovation and new construction in buildings that remain in use while the work is underway. Designing for the long term shapes how we practice.
Your role
As a Project Architect, you will lead projects of varying size, working alongside principals, associate partners, and senior architects who lead our practice areas and support you on your projects. You will work directly with clients and present to their committees and boards, carry a project from early design through construction documents, bidding, and construction administration, and coordinate with our structural, mechanical, electrical, and civil consultants. You collaborate closely with our interior design team from the earliest stages of a project, fostering an integrated design approach that considers architecture and interiors together throughout the design process. You will mentor architectural designers and staff working toward licensure while continuing to receive mentorship from our senior architects.

Responsibilities
- Leading project teams through schematic design, design development, and construction documents
- Serving as the day-to-day point of contact for clients, user groups, and public boards
- Producing and coordinating construction documents in Revit, with AutoCAD where a project or a client requires it
- Performing code analysis under the governing building code, most often the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code and the Rehabilitation Subcode, and under the codes of neighboring states on work outside New Jersey
- Coordinating consultants and reviewing their documents for completeness and fit
- Reviewing and authoring specification sections
- Carrying projects through bidding and procurement
- Administering construction: submittals, requests for information, field observation and closeout
- Mentoring less experienced staff and reviewing their work
Delivery often takes more than one form. Much of our work is publicly bid, and public work follows its own tempo: approvals run through several agencies and often take months, funding cycles shape the schedule, and the documentation these projects require is heavy from the first submission through closeout. We also work for private developers, where the pace is set by financing, the client stays closely involved throughout, and we work at times in a design-build capacity alongside a contractor. A Project Architect here moves between all three, which makes for varied work and rewards architects who adapt easily to changing demands.
Qualifications
- A professional degree in architecture from a NAAB-accredited program
- At least five years of experience in architectural practice
- Licensure in New Jersey, licensure in another state with eligibility for reciprocity, or substantial progress toward licensure
- Working proficiency in Revit on production documents, and working knowledge of AutoCAD
Experience with New Jersey public projects or with existing buildings is welcome. What matters more to us is how you solve problems and how you work as part of a team.
Compensation and benefits
Compensation is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Our benefits include work-from-home options, medical coverage, retirement, and paid vacation and sick days. The position is based in our Trenton office.
