About the Position
The Heritage Alliance is seeking a creative, organized, and highly collaborative Programs and Education Coordinator to develop, coordinate, promote, and lead educational programs, public programs, special events, and volunteer activities throughout the year.
This is a full time position and a key member of a small staff. The Coordinator will work closely with the Executive Director, Museum Specialist, volunteers, schools, community partners, historic craftspeople, storytellers, and other program participants.
This is a hands on position with a lot of variety. The successful candidate should enjoy developing new ideas, working with people, managing multiple projects, and turning ideas into successful programs. Already established programs will come with guides to help get situated and understand current offerings. With time, this candidate will also be able to help refine these, suggest alternatives, or make them more efficient.
What You Will Do
Education & School Programs
- Coordinate and lead the Oak Hill School Program, including scheduling, school communication, volunteers, supplies, and schoolmarms
- Work with schools, teachers, homeschool groups, and other educational partners
- Coordinate tour guides, storytellers, and other program participants
- Develop and run programs such as History Detectives and the annual Visual Architecture Scavenger Hunt
- Prepare educational materials and supplies
- Help develop future summer and family programming
Program Development
- Develop and coordinate new programs for children, families, adults, and visitors
- Expand adult programming such as lectures, workshops, demonstrations, classes, and social programs
- Build relationships with historians, artists, craftspeople, performers, and other community partners
- Identify new ideas and opportunities that strengthen Heritage Alliance programming
- Work with other staff to coordinate programming across our museums and historic sites
Events & Community Programs
- Help plan and run Heritage Alliance events and the Heritage Alliance participation in Town of Jonesborough events, including Chocolate Fest, Wizarding World, Pumpkin Fest, Santa’s Village, Jonesborough Days, Heritage Fair, holiday programs, and other special events
- Coordinate volunteers, presenters, supplies, schedules, promotion, and on site event logistics
- Represent the Heritage Alliance at community events, history fairs, conferences, and other regional activities
Museum & Public Programs
- Coordinate and promote programs such as History Happy Hour, History Trivia, History Book Club, True and Chilling Tales Tours, lectures, workshops, and other museum programs
- Work with the Museum Specialist to develop new museum programming
Volunteer Coordination
- Recruit, schedule, communicate with, and support volunteers
- Coordinate volunteers for educational programs, events, fundraisers, and special activities
- Take a leading role in volunteer coordination for major fundraisers such as Afternoon Tea and Progressive Dinner
- Help plan the annual volunteer appreciation event
Communications & Promotion
- Promote programs, events, and volunteer opportunities through social media and other communication channels
- Create written and visual promotional materials
- Write and distribute press releases
- Coordinate with local media, schools, businesses, and community partners
- Help maintain a consistent Heritage Alliance voice and public presence
Administration
- Handle program fees, donations, and other program income as assigned
- Track program expenses, receipts, attendance, and other program information
- Assist with program budgets and financial reporting
- Maintain calendars, schedules, contacts, and program records
- Report regularly to the Executive Director
About the Heritage Alliance
The Heritage Alliance of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the architectural, historical, and cultural resources of our region. We operate historic sites and museums, maintain a local history archive, provide heritage education programs, develop exhibits and public programs, and work with community partners to preserve and interpret the history of Jonesborough and the surrounding region.
Requirements

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organization and time management

- Ability to work independently and as part of a small team
- Comfortable working with schools, volunteers, community partners, and the public
- Strong attention to detail
- Ability to handle money and maintain accurate records
- Willingness to work frequent evenings and weekends
- Interest in history, education, museums, public programming, or a related field
Preferred
- Degree or relevant coursework in education, history, public history, museum studies, communications, event planning, or a related field
- Experience with museums, education, nonprofits, events, public programming, or volunteer coordination
- Experience working with school groups
- Experience with social media, marketing, or public relations
- Experience developing programs for children, families, or adults
- Familiarity with the history of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia
Schedule
This is a full time position of approximately 40 hours per week.
The schedule will vary depending on school programs, public programs, meetings, and events. Frequent evening and weekend hours are an essential part of this position. The Coordinator should expect some weeks to look very different from others, with weekday planning and administrative work balanced by evening and weekend programs and events.
