Description

We are seeking an excellent scholar to join a project team led by Prof. Raul Cârstocea, who has been awarded a European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant for a project entitled Insurgent Temporalities: Fascism as a Global Anti-Universalist Project (INTEMPO). The postdoctoral researcher will be part of a team undertaking a novel analysis of fascism during the interwar period and the Second World War, understood as a global phenomenon. They will engage in archival research, co-organise the activities of the project and contribute to the publications ensuing from them, and co-lead with the PI one of the work packages of the project, as detailed below. They will have the opportunity to develop their research, both individually and as part of a team of ambitious scholars. 

 INTEMPO

Insurgent Temporalities: Fascism as a Global Anti-Universalist Project (INTEMPO) is funded by the European Research Council (ERC), as part of the ERC Consolidator Grant 2024 scheme of Horizon Europe, grant number no. 101170033. Led by Prof. Raul Cârstocea (Principal Investigator), the project investigates the global spread of fascism during the interwar period, particularly with a view to the transnational connections established by fascist movements and regimes. INTEMPO hypothesises that, despite their national specificities, fascist movements and regimes around the world recognised their commonalities and drew inspiration from, as well as engaged with, like-minded activists abroad. It argues that, while the significant differences between fascist organisations were a consequence of different national pasts in diverse contexts, fascists shared a common vision of a future ‘New Order’ that allowed them to see themselves as part of a European or, indeed, global fascist moment. This hypothesis will be tested against a number of case studies of fascist movements, within and outside of Europe, through archive-based research into their ideology and practices.

Requirements

Essential

•       A PhD in Modern History; 
•       An internationally recognized research profile, demonstrated by publications in leading peer-reviewed journals, demonstrating potential to become a  significant contributor in their field;
•       Excellent knowledge of Japanese; 
•       Availability to carry out primary research in archives and libraries in Japan; 
•       Demonstrable expertise in modern history; 
•       Experience of undertaking archival research;
•       Excellent organisational, teamwork, and communication skills. 

 Desirable 

•        Minimum of two years relevant post-doctoral research experience; 
•       Demonstrable experience working on transnational and/or global history;
•       Familiarity with conceptual, cultural and/or intellectual history;
•       Demonstrable interest in the study of time and temporality;
•       Expertise on the debates around the relationship between imperial Japan, fascism and colonialism;
•       Experience working as part of a team in a major, multi-year research project;
•       Experience organising academic events and/or co-editing academic publications (journal special issues, edited volumes). 
•       Capacity for theoretical, interdisciplinary, and/or comparative work. 

Specific duties include:

•       Conducting research and engaging in scholarship of quality and substance within INTEMPO;
•       Co-leading with the project PI WP3 of the project – ‘Macro-temporalities: The re-ordering of geopolitical space and fascism’s relation to colonialism’ – and contributing to WP4, ‘Fascism as a global anti-universalist project’; 
•       Contributing to the organisation of and participating with paper presentations in the activities of INTEMPO: two thematic workshops and a final conference;
•       Disseminating research and scholarly outputs through presentations at national and international conferences; 
•       Publishing a minimum of three peer-reviewed research articles in leading peer-reviewed journals and contributing as co-editor and author to the edited volume resulting from the final conference; 
•       Contributing regularly to the project’s website; 
•       Participating in the training, coordination, and mentoring of PhD researchers; 
•       Assisting the PI with occasional administrative tasks undertaken within the remit of INTEMPO.
