The Village of Elk Rapids is seeking a highly motivated and community-focused professional to serve as our next Planning & Zoning Administrator. This full-time position plays an important role in shaping the future growth and development of our vibrant waterfront community while helping preserve the character and charm that make Elk Rapids a special place to live, work, and visit.
Position Summary
Under the direction of Village administration, the Planning & Zoning Administrator is responsible for administering and enforcing zoning regulations, coordinating planning and development activities, reviewing site plans and permit applications, supporting planning-related boards and commissions, and providing guidance to residents, contractors, developers, and the public regarding zoning and land use matters.
Requirements
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Administer and enforce the Village Zoning Ordinance and related land use regulations
Review zoning permit applications, site plans, land use requests, and development proposals for compliance
Serve as staff liaison to the Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals
Coordinate public hearings and assist with planning studies and long-range planning initiatives
Respond to inquiries from residents, businesses, contractors, and developers regarding zoning requirements
Conduct field inspections related to zoning compliance and land use activities
Maintain accurate zoning, planning, and permit records
Assist with ordinance updates, master planning efforts, and implementation of community development goals
Prepare reports, correspondence, and recommendations for Village leadership and boards/commissions
Attend evening meetings as required
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, public administration, geography, community development, or related field preferred
Relevant municipal planning, zoning, code enforcement, or local government experience preferred
Knowledge of zoning administration, land use principles, and municipal planning practices
Familiarity with Michigan planning and zoning laws preferred
Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
Ability to interpret ordinances, maps, site plans, and legal descriptions
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and general office software
Valid driver’s license required
