ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION: Texas Rural Legal Aid, Inc. (TRLA) is the third largest legal services program in the nation. TRLA has a strong reputation for providing aggressive, high quality legal representation to the low-income population in South and West Texas. The program serves some of the poorest areas in the nation, where racial discrimination and exploitation of low wage are still very common. TRLA's energetic civil rights, labor and poverty law practice has made it one of the leading public interest law firms in the Southwest. A particularly high proportion of TRLA's cases fall in areas of agricultural labor rights, voting rights, discrimination in employment/housing/public services, consumer rights, and public benefits. TRLA is committed to meeting the most pressing legal needs of its individual clients. The program does far more litigation that the typical legal services, office, especially impact litigation in federal court. In addition to its litigation, TRLA provides legal assistance to low-income community groups and agricultural labor organizations, and undertakes a broad variety of community legal education projects and assists clients with low-income community development projects.
