Description

This Mayfair Coordinator position provides leadership and support for professional development and network-building efforts for the SOMOS Fuertes program, as part of the Learning and Leadership Development (LLD) department. This staff member plays a key role in the development of a vibrant network  of well-trained, highly skilled promotores to increase access to economic opportunity for excluded workers, create connections between institutions and local communities, and carry out transformative work that advances community wellbeing and justice. They will also expand access to professional development opportunities for the wider SOMOS Collective and partner initiatives. 

The Fuertes Network & Development Coordinator will be directly responsible for the design, implementation and evaluation of a radically inclusive professional development strategy, including workshops, practice spaces, and other forms of support. This position will support community-building within the Fuertes network, building a sense of belonging for promotores and cultivating a culture of compañerismo and cooperation that challenges competition and individualism. The Fuertes Network & Development Coordinator will also closely align their work with other programmatic areas in order to move forward SOMOS’ strategic priorities. 

This position reports directly to the Fuertes Economic Justice Manager and works alongside a team of program coordinators and Program Assistants.

Ideal Candidate Qualifications and Qualities

  • Deep passion and commitment to grassroots leadership and to advancing racial, economic, and social justice in immigrant, working class, and multi-generational communities.

  • Experience in community organizing, popular education, or movement organizations preferred.

  • Experience or willingness to learn about promotor models. 

  • Experience applying popular education methodology in group facilitation and developing participatory workshops.

  • Experience effectively supervising volunteers, leaders, promotores, and/or staff.

  • Experience with innovative workforce development programs and/or economic justice background preferred.

  • Desire to collaborate and co-create projects with others. Comfort with community-led strategy and delegating responsibilities to others.

  • Desire and commitment to experiment and develop new, innovative approaches, while implementing and executing quality work. 

  • Ability to adapt to changing conditions, manage ambiguity, and be solution-oriented. Desire to engage in ongoing learning. 

  • Commitment to nurturing healthy relationships and communication and openness to working within a restorative organization. 

  • Consistently high-quality analysis, decision-making and judgment.

Key Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bilingual/biliterate Spanish-English required

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate with diverse groups.

  • Ability to self-direct and take initiative in the area of work. Strong time management skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace programs. 

  • Experience utilizing social media platforms for community outreach preferred.  

  • Able to work flexible hours, including some nights and weekends.

  • Valid California driver’s license and proof of auto insurance required.

  • Fingerprint and background check may be required.



Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities (approximate % of time)

Programmatic strategy development, planning, coordination, and implementation (60%)

  • Design, plan, and facilitate radically inclusive and participatory professional development workshops for leaders, promotores, staff, Mayfair residents and partner organizations.

  • Develop curriculum in alignment with the Universidad Popular de Mayfair. 

  • Design, plan, and try out other professional and workforce development approaches, such as coaching, tool development, mutual support, and practice spaces. 

  • Document and share professional development learning and tools. 

  • Collaborate with staff to support promotores in their current placement in internal and external projects. 

  • Support the development of the Fuertes Promotor Network, including building a sense of belonging and cultivating values and practices of cooperation, mutual support, and ongoing learning. 

  • Update Fuertes Network protocols and policies as needed and develop and implement  communications strategy to ensure implementation throughout the organization and with relevant partners. 

  • Welcome and onboard new members of the Fuertes Promotor Network. Ensure alignment between leadership development and the process for becoming a promotor.

  • Support with the ongoing distribution of work opportunities within the Fuertes Network. 

  • Collaborate with Human Resources on strategies to expand access to pathways to work and development opportunities through and within SOMOS. 

  • Collaborate with the Coop Hub project to ensure promotores and leaders have access to small business and coop development resources.  

  • Collaborate with Fuertes Community Engagement Coordinator to ensure promotor workforce readiness. 

  • Oversee registration and outreach for Fuertes professional development sessions. Co-coordinate outreach strategy with the UPM Coordinator for all LLD learning sessions and train team members as needed.

  • Support additional Fuertes programmatic strategies and activities as needed.  

  • Support Collective spaces and LLD collaborative strategies. 

External Relationships and Regional Advocacy  (5%)

  • Establish meaningful working relationships with key partners to advance our vision and strategic goals.

  • Participate in regional and statewide efforts focused on promotores, economic justice, and innovative approaches to workforce development. 

  • Represent SOMOS Mayfair at meetings with external partners.

Impact Evaluation  (10%)

  • Collect, organize, and analyze data for the purposes of program evaluation and strategy-building. 

  • Carry out creative strategies to document and tell the story of our work.

  • Conduct strategic evaluation of program areas with support from supervisor biannually.

  • Conduct regular and consistent planning with leaders and team members to ensure program effectiveness, deep and sustainable impact, and continuous learning.

Supervision and Leadership Development (10%)

  • Oversee the work of volunteer leaders, contractors, and Program Assistants, as relevant.

  • Ensure implementation of the Leadership Development Cycle within Fuertes and that team members are connected to ongoing learning opportunities and Collective spaces.

Organizational Alignment (10%)

  • Move families to collective action. Engage in advocacy and organizing and integrate campaign priorities into the Fuertes program.

  • Connect leaders to our Family Resource Centers.

  • Conduct assessments and intake forms to support families to meet their needs.

  • Coordinate closely with other SOMOS departments to support strategic alignment of planning, evaluation, implementation across our organization to uphold our model.

  • Always uphold our full SOMOS model. Support families and partners to understand this way of working by modeling our integrated approach

  • Seek out opportunities to collaborate to across SOMOS departments and build relationships

Administrative and Professional Development (5%)

  • Create and execute an annual work plan that includes organizational strategies and milestone deadlines. Support the development of program priorities and budgeting.  

  • Execute a Learning & Professional Development Plan to develop or strengthen essential skills and seek opportunities for greater and on-going learning, including economic justice, promotor models, and popular education pedagogy.

  • Participate in agency wide decision-making arenas and in regular internal political education as needed.

  • Contribute to the development of organizational world-view and development of strategic plan.

  • Participate in SOMOS Mayfair staff meetings and training and support major organizational campaigns and projects.
