Experience administering computer systems in a production environment with emphasis on the following skills/technologies/processes.
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL 8 or newer)
- Authentication & Authorization Systems (SSSD, Kerberos, LDAP, SSO)
- Scripting (Bash, YAML, Python, Java)
- Active Directory (Functional level 2016 or newer)
- Sharepoint
- Virtualization (VMware, ProxMox)
- Cloud environments (AWS, Azure)
- Monitoring systems (Nagios, Check_MK)
- Backups (Veeam)
- Change management
- Writing technical documentation
- Providing excellent customer service
The University of Georgia Enterprise Information Technology Services (EITS) is seeking qualified candidates for a Systems Administrator position in the Client Services and Systems Administration group. This position will work as part of a close-knit team responsible for the system administration of high-profile production servers providing central IT services to the campus.
The strongest candidates for this position will have extensive system administration experience with UNIX and Linux operating systems in a production environment, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work as a member of a team of dedicated professionals.
Typical responsibilities:
• OS and application lifecycle support including installation, upgrades, patching, and decommissioning while adhering to EITS change management policy.
• Monitoring the availability and performance of servers and services.
• Securing systems and services.
• Performing emergency troubleshooting and problem resolution, including after-hours response as part of a team on call 24×7×365.
• Assist in the development of standards and recommendations for critical functions and services such as system configuration and backup & recovery.
• Develop and maintain written documentation to support the maintenance of production-level services.

Administers production Unix systems that provide centralized IT services to the campus population and the public.
- Supports OS (primarily RHEL, other versions of Linux or similar Unix based operating systems as needed) and applications (such as SSO, mail gateway, and RedHat Satellite) throughout lifecycle including installation, upgrades, and decommission.
- Monitors production systems.
- Implement system policies.
- Schedules system processes such as data transfers and backups. Execute recovery operations when necessary.
- Implements best practices with regard to system security.
- Responds as needed to threats and incidents.
Writes and maintains documentation that is useful to assist in administration and troubleshooting of managed systems by a team of coworkers with varying skill levels.
- Writes new documentation to record knowledge of new systems and services or to fill gaps in knowledge of existing systems and services.
- Revises existing documentation as necessary to maintain relevance and track changes.
- Works with others in EITS to document system policies and procedures.
- Facilitates knowledge transfer between units inside and outside of EITS.
Evaluates, recommends, and designs systems and applications to provide required network services for campus clients in a centralized client/server architecture.
- Works with other units to maintain and enhance existing applications and services.
- Works with other units to assist in the development and deployment of new and existing applications and services consistent with the EITS Tactical Plan.
- Works with vendors as needed to maintain and deploy central services
Provides internal support for production and computing services
- Works in cross-functional teams to facilitate EITS projects.
- Works with other EITS staff to supplement end user support for production services.
Project Management
- Works with management to develop project plans, including work breakdowns, timelines, milestones, and resources needed.
- Leads project teams, tracks progress and brings issues to the attention of management for resolution.
- Documents all stages of projects from initiation to closeout.
