Cornell’s Janet L. Swanson Wildlife Hospital, in the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Clinical Sciences, is seeking a post-doctoral associate for a position focused on wildlife health and avian research. This position is ideal for early career veterinarians planning on a future career in free-ranging wildlife health. The program will provide a dynamic training environment where the postdoc will lead a substantial avian research effort primarily focused on bald eagle health and conservation as well as develop expertise in native wildlife disease diagnosis and management in a clinical setting. The postdoc will interface with a wide variety of wildlife professionals, including wildlife hospital faculty and staff (including two ACZM diplomates), New York State’s Department of Environmental Conservation, licensed wildlife rehabilitators, and a wide variety of faculty experts within the College of Veterinary Medicine. The initial appointment is for one year, with potential for renewal for up to two additional years contingent on performance and funding. The position target start date is July 1, 2026. Examples of duties and responsibilities:
Provide exceptional veterinary care to a variety of native wildlife species in a busy teaching hospital setting with a diverse team of faculty, interns/residents, licensed veterinary technicians and students.
Work with the program director to design, implement and execute innovative research projects and programmatic efforts.
Prepare research reports and scholarly publications.
Present research findings at conferences and seminars.
Collaborate with wildlife professional partners across New York state including the Department of Environmental Conservation and licensed wildlife rehabilitators.
Participate in ACZM rounds and other professional development opportunities at Cornell.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of a DVM (or equivalent degree) within the past 5 years.
A minimum of two years of clinical practice experience.
A strong interest in and commitment to interdisciplinary and collaborative research.
Willingness and ability to both lead efforts and be an effective member of a diverse team.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational skills, and attention to detail.
A valid US driver’s license.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of a residency in wildlife or zoological medicine, or completion of a rotating internship followed by one or more specialty internships in zoological medicine.
Research experience, including writing grants and peer-reviewed publications.
ACZM board certification or eligibility.
