Position Overview: The Field Operations Supervisor is responsible for direct oversight, coordination, and daily execution of field-based non-destructive testing operations. This role supervises field technicians to ensure inspections are performed safely, accurately, and in compliance with applicable industry codes, customer specifications, and company quality standards.
The Field Operations Supervisor assigns work, provides technical guidance, monitors productivity, and ensures proper documentation of inspection results. This position serves as the operational liaison between field technicians, project management, and customers, ensuring timely delivery of inspection services while maintaining the highest standards of safety, integrity, and professionalism.
Key Responsibilities
- Operational Oversight
- Supervise and coordinate the activities of field technicians, ensuring work is executed in accordance with project scope, industry standards (ASNT, ASME, API, AWS, etc.), and company procedures.
- Assign daily inspection tasks based on technician certifications (e.g., UT, MT, PT, VT), skill levels, and project requirements.
- Monitor field productivity, efficiency, and quality of inspection results.
- Ensure proper setup, calibration, and operation of NDT equipment.
- Track job progress and provide regular operational updates to management and customers.
- Quality & Technical Compliance
- Ensure all inspections are performed in accordance with governing codes, customer specifications, and written procedures.
- Review and validate inspection reports for accuracy, completeness, and technical compliance.
- Conduct quality audits and field evaluations to ensure procedural adherence.
- Ensure proper documentation, traceability, and reporting of inspection findings.
- Support root cause analysis and corrective action processes when non-conformances are identified.
- Safety Leadership
- Enforce compliance with OSHA standards, site-specific safety requirements, and company safety policies.
- Conduct task hazard analyses (THAs), safety meetings, and field safety observations.
- Ensure technicians use appropriate PPE and follow safe work practices in industrial environments.
- Investigate incidents, near misses, or safety concerns and implement corrective actions.
- Team Leadership & Development
- Train, mentor, and develop NDT technicians to enhance technical skills and professional growth.
- Evaluate technician performance, provide coaching, and recommend promotions, additional certifications, or disciplinary action as needed.
- Weekly feedback, Conduct assessments and update training matrixes.
- Handle any conduct issues or discussions and document accordingly
- Assist in workforce planning, staffing decisions, and onboarding of new technicians.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for field personnel, resolving issues and escalating concerns appropriately.
- Administrative & Resource Management
- Monitor equipment usage, calibration schedules, and maintenance to ensure reliability and compliance.
- Coordinate logistics including equipment allocation, materials, and site access requirements.
- Maintain accurate records of job activities, inspection data, incidents, and material usage.
- Monitor labor hours, productivity, and project expenses to support accurate job costing.
- Coordinate with Operations and Project Management teams to ensure efficient execution of services.
Qualifications & Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- 35 years of experience in NDT field operations required.
- Current NDT certifications (Level II minimum required in VT & MT; Level II in UT strongly preferred).
- Demonstrated supervisory or lead technician experience.
- Strong understanding of applicable industry codes and standards (ASNT, ASME, API, AWS, ASTM, etc.).
- Knowledge of inspection techniques including UT, MT, PT, and VT.
- Strong planning, scheduling, and task management skills.
- Exceptional attention to detail and technical accuracy.
- Ability to manage multiple crews and projects in fast-paced environments.
- Excellent leadership, organizational, and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to analyze inspection data and ensure accurate reporting.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interface with customers, engineers, and management.
- OSHA 10 required (OSHA 30 preferred).
- Valid driver's license required.
- Ability to travel a minimum of 75%, including overnight and extended project assignments.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work extended hours in industrial environments, including refineries, plants, fabrication shops, construction sites, and outdoor locations.
- Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods and climb stairs and ladders.
- Frequent bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and working in confined spaces or at elevated heights.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds independently and greater weights with assistance.
- Ability to operate NDT equipment, tools, calibration devices, and mobile reporting systems with precision and manual dexterity.
- Ability to work in varying environmental conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, noise, dust, and other industrial hazards while wearing required PPE.
- Adequate vision (including close vision and depth perception) and hearing to safely perform inspections and maintain situational awareness.
Mental & Cognitive Requirements
- Ability to lead technicians and make sound technical and safety decisions in fast-paced industrial environments.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure inspection accuracy, code compliance, and documentation integrity.
- Ability to manage multiple crews, priorities, and deadlines simultaneously.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills for customer interaction, reporting, and team leadership.
- Ability to resolve conflicts, provide coaching, and address performance issues professionally.
- Ability to remain composed under pressure and adapt to changing project scopes, schedules, and site conditions.
- Strong organizational and analytical skills to manage scheduling, labor tracking, equipment oversight, and quality documentation.
FLSA Status: Exempt
Pay Range: $90-110,000 annually
Quarterly bonus eligibility, dependent on overall Safety, Quality, Production.
Reports to: Inspection Operations Manager
